We recently connected with Jordan Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Throughout my life I always felt like I gravitated towards wanting to help others, wanting to be a part of a team/community and a having passion for fitness. In the summers of high school and college I would help run basketball camps and clinics to give back to the younger generations. The first job I ever had was as an aid at a Physical Therapy clinic at 17 years old. I always knew that I wanted to help others in one way or another, and I’ve always asked God to put me on the right path and to help keep me on that path, even if the path isn’t what I had envisioned.
I originally went to college as a biology major to become a physical therapist. I played basketball my entire life and as a college basketball player, physical therapists had helped me throughout my career to recover from injuries and get back on the court. It was something that I wanted to be able to repay to others and I was CONVINCED that’s what I was meant to do for a living. Spoiler alert, that was not what I was meant to do.
Through my college basketball team, I found an amazing Fitness Studio that we would go to for pre-season conditioning and strength training. I had always liked working out and lifting on my own, but this was different. I instantly fell in love with the idea of an intense group workout with us all being pushed to our limits. I was never the biggest, fastest or strongest kid, but working out started to become something that boosted my self-esteem and left me feeling accomplished in a way that I hadn’t felt before.
Prior to this, becoming a trainer or a gym owner had never even crossed my mind as a career path. I was “supposed” to finish out my four years of college on my basketball scholarship and then do three years of graduate school to get my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, right? Wasn’t that my plan and my purpose?
I soon realized that I was being called to impact and help people in a completely different way. My purpose and way of giving back wasn’t going to be to help people recover from an injury and get them back to their baseline. My purpose and way of giving back is to motivate, inspire and challenge people to become the best version of themselves like I had been. To help them see that they are capable of so much more than they would have realized on their own. And to give people the confidence and a sense of accomplishment that would transcend from just a workout into their daily lives and into who they are as a person.
That is my purpose, and Limitless Fitness is my vehicle to fulfill that purpose and use the talents that God gave me to share with others.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own and run a group fitness gym called Limitless Fitness with my wife in Forest Hill, MD. We are focused on creating an inviting and inspiring environment that allows people of all fitness levels to feel comfortable and work towards their health and fitness goals. We give multiple options for every exercise from beginner to advanced, including no-impact options and modifications for injuries.
We are all class based and run 45-minute metabolic training workouts based around strength training at a pace. We are much more strength focused than traditional bootcamps and HIIT classes. What really sets us apart from other group fitness studios is that we treat our classes like personal training in a group setting. We personally assign every member their own weight for each movement each day, just like a personal trainer would at the start of each class. We are not only there to motivate you the entire time, but also to educate and challenge you, adjust your form and help you get the most out of each and every workout.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say that the three most important and impactful qualities/skills in my journey have been a willingness to learn, staying determined through adversity and genuinely loving what I do. We are all capable of learning new things and the more open we are to that, the better we will become. Trying to build something from the ground up can be extremely challenging, especially early on. Staying determined and confident in your abilities and ideas is so important. Even when things seem impossible, stick with it because a breakthrough could be right around the corner. If you love what you do, it’ll make it even easier to stick with it and continue to try to learn from others and improve. All three things go hand in hand.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful? My wife has BY FAR been the most helpful person when it comes to overcoming challenges and becoming successful. The two of us started Limitless from the ground up and have to lean on one another for everything when
it comes to the business. If we don’t do it, it doesn’t get done. Having a spouse and a business partner all in one has been so helpful and has led to us being able to create something pretty great together and accomplish so many of our goals.
